Think Pink

This weekend’s “Pink Moon” may not have been the smallest, farthest, and faintest full moon of the year, but it was spectacular nonetheless. The weather cooperated in every way, with mild temperatures on Friday, slightly warmer on Saturday, and near-record highs on Sunday.

We arrived on Friday afternoon just in time for a service call from Glenn with RV Rescue, who replaced our faulty water pump. Now that Cloud 9 is beginning its second decade, we’re finding it necessary to replace various items that have grown old and tired after more than 100,000 miles on the road.

Chef Cliff’s masterful steak dinner gave way to a roaring campfire, thanks to friendly neighbors who shared some kindling and logs.

Saturday found us relaxing outdoors, with Jon wrapping up a work project. Our friend Scott stopped by during his bike trip through the park for a pleasant visit. We also had occasion to meet Mary, a former resident from our neck of the woods, who talked at length about camping with two sturdy German shepherds. We eventually brunched and napped before beginning our evening activities, which included a long walk and another crackling campfire — this one fueled by small branches and scavenged wood. We ended the evening by watching a mildly amusing episode of “Saturday Night Live,” hosted by Jon Hamm. We even enjoyed the first musical performance by Lizzo (we petered out after Weekend Update so we missed her second number).

Sunday brought warm temperatures, sunny skies, and gusty winds. Still, we were able to enjoy most of the day beneath the pavilion. Again, Jon spent considerable time on a work project, but we were finally able to succumb to an afternoon nap. In days gone by, we would have both been consumed by the demands of Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. Although the memory of those days linger, we’re now much more inclined to follow the advice of John Muir, albeit with a little literary license: We’d much rather be in the mountains thinking about God than in a church thinking about mountains.
