We had our sights set on Loyd Park for the weekend, but late Thursday afternoon, everything changed. A cancellation at Dinosaur Valley RV Park meant we could join the Heart of Texas Camping Unit, our local chapter of Airstream Club International, for their holiday gathering. After drifting away from the club while caring for Jon’s mom, we were determined to re-engage – and this was our chance.
Arriving Friday afternoon wasn’t without its challenges. A wrong turn led us down a county road and across a low river crossing before we finally rolled into the park. Once settled, we hung a few colored lights and a wreath – our modest nod to the decorating contest and the park’s fundraising event. It wasn’t much, but it felt good to join in the holiday spirit. After happy hour with the group, we returned to Cloud 9 for a cozy Date Night dinner.
Saturday was a mix of relaxation and reconnection. We lingered over “CBS Saturday Morning” and The New York Times before joining the group for breakfast. Later, instead of napping, we took advantage of the beautiful, mild weather, and hopped on our electric scooters to tour the campground, admiring festive displays and catching up with old friends. The evening potluck was a highlight, complete with the Aluminum Chef contest and a lively white elephant gift exchange. In a heartwarming twist, our friend Susan gifted her white elephant prize – an espresso machine – to Cliff, unaware his 60th birthday was the next day. Jon led the group in a spirited “Happy Birthday,” and we capped the night with stories around a roaring campfire.
Sunday morning brought familiar routines but also a bittersweet farewell as we packed up for our noon departure.
This weekend reminded us why we love this community: the laughter, the generosity, and the shared joy of life on the road. Here’s to more adventures with friends old and new.
