When we started this site four years ago, we included the line in the About This Blog section, “If we could figure out a way to live full-time in the Airstream, we would do it without hesitation.” We’re closer now than ever before to figuring out that way, and we’ve given ourselves a year to…
A couple years ago, we visited the Lorraine Motel while camping near Memphis. The site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination is now the National Civil Rights Museum, with exhibits that trace the Civil Rights Movement in America from the 17th century to the present. On this MLK Day, as we enjoy the final few…
Our first camp-out of the New Year found us at Loyd Park planning our long trip for 2019. This year, we’ve decided to visit Glacier National Park, a 1,500-square-mile wilderness area in northern Montana. With glacial-carved peaks and valleys running to the Canadian border, the park features pristine forests, alpine meadows, rugged mountains, and spectacular…
The long Christmas holiday weekend took us south to Matagorda Bay, a large estuary on the Texas coast about halfway between Galveston and Corpus Christi. We stayed at the Matagorda Bay Nature Park, located at the mouth of the Colorado River on the Matagorda Peninsula. (FYI, the 862-mile-long Texas river was named by Spanish explorers…
After years of trial and error, we finally settled on a flag pole and finial for Cloud 9. It may not seem like a big deal, but had we known then what we know now, we could have saved ourselves a lot of time and money. For the uninitiated, many Airstreamers display flags on or…
This weekend was an opportunity to rest and recover from a busy two weeks of travel. After returning from our Thanksgiving visit to Jon’s family in the St. Louis area, Jon headed to Chicago for a three-day trip to the Radiological Society of North America’s annual conference. We were looking forward to long walks, crackling…
Once again, our Thanksgiving break took us to the St. Louis area, where we visited Jon’s family. Although his mom lives in Alton, Illinois, our destination for the duration was about 40 miles away at Symond’s Dutch Hollow Village, described by Google as a “manufactured home community.” Jon’s nephew, Adam, lives there in a single-wide,…
We headed to Loyd Park for a perfect fall weekend, complete with mild weather, chilly nights and crisp, clear mornings. It was an ideal time for reflecting on the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. The guns fell silent at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month…
It’s hard to believe that more than five years have passed since we last visited Lake Tawakoni State Park. Opened in 2001, the park is one of the newer facilities in the Texas State Park system. The reservoir, located on the Sabine River and constructed in 1960, supplies water to Dallas and surrounding suburbs, and…
Although we tried for weeks to get a local campsite, none were to be had. Halloween has taken on all the trappings of a national holiday, so area campgrounds are completely booked the weekend closest to it. Our only option was to spend the weekend in Cloud 9 parked at the storage unit. It’s like…
